If you’ve suffered with insomnia for weeks or more, then you know that finding sleep aids that work can be a challenge, one that has several aspects, including: different sleep aids work for different body chemistries, some sleeps aids treat some types of insomnia but not others, and some sleep aids don’t work at all. As a result, many insomnia sufferers try sleep aid after sleep aid in search of insomnia relief, a scenario that can require more patience and money than most of us have.

If you’re searching for non-prescription sleep aids that work, one of the best ways to shorten your search is reading reviews of products you haven’t tried yet. That’s why we’re evaluating a sleep aid that claims to offer insomnia help for everyone: Somesta by Newton-Everett (not to be confused with the prescription sleep aid Somesta). To find out how well Somesta works, we begin by examining its ingredients.

Somesta Ingredients

Somesta contains some ingredients that are common in sleep aids and some that aren’t:

  • Vitamin C for stress reduction;
  • Niacin, L-Tryptofan, Inositol Niacinate, and Vitamin B6 for serotonin maintenance;
  • Magnesium for calmness and stress reduction;
  • Valerian Extract for relaxation and calmness;
  • Chamomile Extract for relaxation; and
  • Melatonin for regulating the sleep-wake cycle

Five ingredients that distinguish Somesta from other sleep aids are: Vitamin C, Niacin, L-Tryptofan, Inositol Niacinate, and Vitamin B6. Concerning vitamin C, its value for insomnia relief is questionable, as extra doses have been known to disturb sleep instead of aid it. Concerning Niacin, L-Tryptofan, Inositol Niacinate, and Vitamin B6, these ingredients are fine for neurotransmitter maintenance, but they offer less maintenance than 5-HTP, the metabolic precursor to serotonin. Also troubling is that Somesta contains only 1mg of melatonin per dose, low for treating tough insomnia.

*All individuals are unique. Your results can and will vary.

Whereas some companies create a sleep aid simply to have one on the market, the makers of Somesta appear to focus on sleep therapy. But how they arrive at certain ingredients and certain dosage amounts is perplexing.

Does Somesta Work?

With the possible exception of vitamin C, Somesta’s sleep promoting ingredients means it works for someone. But whether it works for most insomnia cases, or even the majority of those involving serotonin deficiency, is another question. Most non-prescription sleep aids are designed to resolve insomnia that results from easy to cure causes, such as vitamin deficiency, moderate stress and anxiety, jet lag, etc. For tougher cases of insomnia, however, especially ones involving serotonin deficiency, their ingredients leave something to be desired. If you can’t sleep for one of the reasons mentioned above, Somesta may help. But if you can’t sleep because of serotonin issues, it probably won’t.
